Mobile technology becomes more and more powerful every day. App developers are taking smartphone capabilities and turning them into handy utilities that make our lives easier. But, with all of these amazing app features available, which ones stand out from the pack? Here are the four of the most innovative smartphone utilities.

1. Task Management

If you want your Android smart phone to be incredibly smarter, then installing the utility Tasker and working on some setting recipes will get you there. Want to have your phone mute automatically when your calendar says that you are busy? Or how about email or text someone when you arrive somewhere but only during certain hours? Tasker can do all of that and then some.

Tasker takes advantage of Android’s technology to make your smartphone into a super robot phone that knows what you want and need when and where you want it. It’s pretty amazing, really.

2. Anonymous Phone Numbers

Have you ever wanted allow someone to contact you, but not give them your real phone number? A forthcoming Android app, Burner, can help you create disposable phone numbers “at the push of a button.”

Burner gives you one or multiple phone numbers with preferred area codes that you can use for phone calls as well as text messaging. Burner lets you keep the “Burner number” for an extended period of time, but it’s based on an in-app purchase of credits and a minutes, and number of characters limit.

3. Custom Push Notifications

Pushover may be the one of the best “under-discovered” utilities for Android. Pushover is an application for sending and receiving push notifications on your mobile device. App creators can send and queue messages to be delivered to an app on your phone. It integrates with some popular web apps like IFTTT (if this then that), Github, Adium, and the all powerful Zapier web service connector.

With Pushover you could create a notification to be pushed to you whenever you receive an email from a certain email address, a notification when you have a new comment pending on WordPress, or even the daily forecast in your area by using IFTTT. This will allow you to automate things like email and news feeds in a more user-friendly way.

4. Distance-Tracking

One of the best apps for tracking your distance while running, walking, hiking or even driving is the My Tracks for Android. My Tracks allows you to easily start a path on your phone and uses GPS to track your speed, distance, elevation and time. You can then share your maps with others via Google+, Facebook or Twitter as well as export your tracks in a number of different data formats allowing you to manipulate and synthesize the data as you like.

My Tracks also syncs with different third party biometric sensors including Zephyr HxM, Polar WearLink or ANT+ so you can integrate your heart rate with your track. One of the best features of this app is its integration with Google Maps, Google Fusion Tables and Google Docs.
