Not only for making phone calls, smartphones can be used to perform a number of tasks, many of which make our lives
considerably easier.

If you have an Android phone, there are quite a few apps in the Google Play store that can help simplify tasks you do every day, or help you overcome barriers in various situations.

We poked around the store to find some of the best apps out there for making life a little easier.

We’ve found a free app the will allow you to communicate with someone who speaks an entirely different language, and another that helps you find your phone if it ever is lost or stolen.

We even found an app that takes the worry out of downloading apps by scanning every app you download to make sure it's safe.

Want to keep what you’ve been doing on your phone a secret from prying eyes? History Eraser can clear your browser history, call log, text messages, Google Play search history,Google Map search history and more in just a tap.

2. Where’s My Droid?

Losing your phone can be an awful experience. Where’s My Droid? is an app designed to help you locate your lost handset if you happen to become separated. Having the app installed on your phone can allow you to make your phone ring remotely, protect your phone with a password and track your phone’s location via GPS. The app will also notify you if your phone’s SIM card or phone number has been changed.

The Pro version of the app will let you remotely wipe data on your phone and SD card, and lock the device remotely.

3. WAZE

WAZE

Waze is a community-based traffic and navigation app that provides turn-by-turn driving directions, as well as information about issues such as roadblocks, accidents and red light cameras you might run into along the way.

The app will automatically re-route you when conditions on the road you’re traveling on change, and can let you share your location, destination and ETA with friends so you can meet up quickly.

The app also has some exclusive gas deals, allowing you to get special discounts on gas purchases along your route.

4. Gate Guru

Gate Guru is a must-have app for frequent travelers. The app lets you view your TripIt and Kayak itineraries, view security wait times, check out a detailed listing of airport amenities and read reviews and tips as well as view photos from others of those amenities.

The app includes easy-to-read airport maps, and has a bookmarking function so you can remember what you liked–-or didn’t like-– about a particular airport. The app also has social media sharing through Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare if you want to keep your network informed on your travels.

5. Google Translate

Ever want to talk to someone who might not speak the same language? Google Translate can translate text between more than 64 different languages, and can translate spoken words in 17 different languages.

If you’re not sure how pronounce a particular translation, the app can speak your translation aloud in 40 different languages. You can also display translations in full-screen mode if you need to have someone read what you’re trying to say in their native tongue.

6. Lookout Mobile Security

Lookout Mobile Security

Lookout Mobile Security provides antivirus protection for your Android phone, backs up your data and can help you find a lost or stolen handset.

The free app scans each app you download from Google Play to ensure it's safe, and blocks malware, spyware, and trojans on your phone. Much like with a home computer, you can schedule daily or weekly antivirus scans.

Contacts are backed up and stored securely with Lookout, so if your phone does disappear you can restore contacts from the cloud onto a new device.
